Honoka’a Chocolate Co. is located on the Hamakua coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i at Kahi Ola Mau Farm. Our farm has a rich history in Hamakua district town of Honoka'a. Located mauka (towards Mauna Kea) from Honoka'a in an area known as Ahualoa, the 5 acres we call home was first purchased by the sugar plantation doctor sometime in the 1920s. We are the fourth resident and keeper of this beautiful property and have transformed it into a working farm.
We love dogs and have three fantastic pups that help us out on the farm: Kimo, Pepper, and Fluffy (aka Fluffberg) are the official greeters. We have over 400 cacao trees, 1,600 white pineapple plants, turmeric, vanilla orchids, 40+ varieties of exotic/tropical fruit and avocado trees, coffee, native Hawaiian varieties of sugar cane (Ko), and lots of other cool stuff. Our farm store operates under a Hawai'i County Agricultural-based Commercial Operation Certification where we sell Hawaiian-grown and value-added products in addition to our own farm products.
Starting in January 2018, we began offering tastings of our artisan chocolates that are made right here on our farm. Our tastings include select chocolates from Hawaii as well as from around the world, allowing you to experience how a particular region’s climate, soils and terrain affect the taste of the chocolate, "the terroir" as winemakers have so famously coined the term. The state of Hawai'i is the only place in the US where cacao grows fruitfully, some calling it the "North Pole" of the cacao growing region.
Our chocolate is carefully handcrafted in small batches using the highest quality sustainably farmed and fair-trade ingredients. We roast, sort, crack, winnow, refine, conch, and temper our small batches with great care. Then we mold and package each of our bars by hand. By sourcing high-quality cacao and carefully crafting small batches of chocolate, we strive to bring out the individual nuances of each bean. In addition to Hawaiian cacao - grown locally on the Big Island of Hawaii, and on our farm - we purchase fermented and dried, fair trade, Organic cacao beans from around the world. We use Organic and sustainably farmed "Turbinado" style cane sugar to add just the right amount of sweetness, but still allowing the plethora of flavors to shine through. Our selection of products includes 70% and 85% Hawaiian cacao chocolate bars, 70% Special Edition chocolate bars made with choice single-origin beans from around the world, and Chocolate Brewing Tea made from the parchment of the cacao bean.
